Agentic AI and the New Industrial Renaissance: From Conversation to Completion

Abstract:
From building Microsoft’s AI platforms to leading Zoom’s agentic AI transformation, Dr. Xuedong Huang has been at the forefront of two defining waves of enterprise AI. In this talk, he reflects on the evolution of AI agents—from language understanding to large-scale orchestration—and how Zoom AI Companion now turns “conversation into completion” across modern workflows. As agentic AI reshapes productivity and communication, Dr. Huang shares lessons and insights for academia and industry to co-create the next generation of intelligent ecosystems.
Biography:
Dr. Xuedong Huang is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Prior to Zoom, he was at Microsoft where he served as Azure AI CTO and Technical Fellow. His career is illustrious in the AI space: he began Microsoft’s speech technology group in 1993, led Microsoft’s AI teams to achieve several of the industry’s first human parity milestones in speech recognition, machine translation, natural language understanding, and computer vision; and Huang holds over 170 US patents and has published over 100 papers and 2 books. Huang is an IEEE fellow (2000), an ACM fellow (2017), and a member of the National Academy of Engineering (2023) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2023). He is a recipient of Asian American Engineer of the Year Award (2011), Wired Magazine's 25 Geniuses (2016), Asian American Corporate Leadership Award (2022), and IEEE Bose Industrial Leader Award (2023). Xuedong received his Ph.D. in EE from the University of Edinburgh in 1989 (sponsored by the British ORS and Edinburgh University Scholarship), his MS in CS from Tsinghua University in 1984, and BS in CS from Hunan University in 1982.
